What is a periodontist?
A dentist specializing in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, a periodontist also places dental implants and has expertise in treating oral inflammation. After dental school, periodontists receive three additional years of education. Familiar with the most up-to-date techniques for diagnostics and treatment, they can also perform cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Periodontists can treat more challenging periodontal cases, too. With a patient who has a complex medical history or severe gum disease, for example. They offer a wide range of treatments. Procedures include scaling and root planing (cleaning the infected surface of the root) and root surface debridement (removing damaged tissue). For patients suffering from severe gum issues, periodontists treat them with a range of surgical procedures.
Periodontists play a pivotal role in maintaining overall oral health and preventing a range of dental issues by catching and treating early symptoms. Their specialization in periodontal diseases, which include gum diseases and conditions affecting the supporting structures of teeth, is essential. They are trained to identify and address the early signs of gum disease, helping patients avoid more severe dental problems down the road. They also excel in the placement of dental implants, a valuable solution for those with missing teeth. With their deep knowledge and specialized skill set, periodontists contribute significantly to improving the overall quality of life for many dental patients.
When necessary, our dentists refer patients to our in-house periodontal specialist, Dr. Michael Landzberg.
Most common cases for our periodontists:
Gingivitis: Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Periodontists often treat gingivitis through professional dental cleanings and by educating patients on proper oral hygiene practices to prevent its progression.
Periodontitis: Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Periodontists use various treatments, including scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline. In some cases, antibiotics or surgical procedures like flap surgery may be necessary.
Dental Implants: Periodontists are experts in dental implant placement. They surgically implant artificial tooth roots into the jawbone to support replacement teeth (crowns, bridges, or dentures) for individuals with missing teeth.
